Feature Overview:
In the next release of the sample rerun feature, we have introduced manual sample rerun. Now, users can manually initiate a rerun for specific test parameters directly from the report entry page. If there are parameters that frequently require reruns, they can be pre-configured in the report format to streamline the process.
When Can Manual Rerun Be Used?
Manual rerun serves as a backup rerun process in the following cases:
- When the machine fails to send rerun values.
- When the doctor is not satisfied with the auto-rerun values and wants to rerun the test again.
- Multiple reruns can be performed on the same sample using manual rerun.
How It Works
- Enable manual rerun for specific parameters in the report format.
- To rerun a parameter, open the report and initiate the rerun—works for partially completed, completed, partially signed, and signed reports.
- The report will move to partially completed status and appear in the interfacing waiting list.
- Once the sample is reprocessed and new values are received, the user needs to confirm the rerun values for the selected parameters.
- The confirmed values will be updated in the report, ensuring accurate results before finalization.
Use case
A technician is reviewing a patient’s electrolyte panel report and notices that the potassium (K⁺) level is critically high (7.2 mmol/L). Since such abnormal values can indicate severe medical conditions (like kidney failure or cardiac risk), they suspect the result might be due to sample hemolysis—a common issue where red blood cells break during collection, artificially raising potassium levels.
To verify the result, the technician initiates a machine triggered rerun. The lab reprocesses the sample on the analyzer, but the machine fails to send the rerun values.
Since the rerun values were not received, the technician initiates manual rerun from the report entry page. This time, the machine successfully processes the sample, and the new potassium value comes back as 4.5 mmol/L, which falls within the normal range.
The technician confirms the rerun value, saves the report, and approves it. Finally, the report is submitted, ensuring the patient and doctor receive accurate and verified results, avoiding unnecessary alarm or incorrect treatment.
